Mrs. Gerjets
My name is Shelley Gerjets. This is my 6th year at Humboldt Middle School teaching 8th grade language arts. I really enjoy students at this level!
I graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelors in elementary education. My first teaching job was in Adel, Iowa teaching first grade. I was in this position for two years and then transferred to 4th grade. I taught language and social studies at the 4th grade level for 5 years. Due to lower enrollment, a section of fourth grade was cut and I moved to teaching 3rd grade. I taught at this level for another 4 years.
After getting married, I moved to the Fort Dodge area and began teaching special education K-6 in the small town of Stratford while working on my masters in special education through Iowa State University. After two years, my husband got a job in the Des Moines area that moved us back to central Iowa. I was fortunate enough to attain a teaching position in special education, again in the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District for 2 ½ years. My husband’s work then took us to Waterford, Wisconsin where I continued to teach special education. After three years, my husband’s employment moved us back to the Fort Dodge area where I began teaching 8th grade language arts. Teaching in a variety of districts and at many different grade levels has given me a wealth of experience and knowledge that I apply to working with students at many different age levels and abilities.
My family includes my husband, Rick, who works for Case-IH corporate. We have two children: Troy is 10 and is in 5th grade this year, and Savanna is 9 and is in 4th grade. Our family also includes an ever-expanding group of pets. We have two cats: Mangebag and Roadkill (there are stories behind the names!) We also had a bottle calf on our acreage for a big chunk of the summer which our daughter showed at the fair for the first time this year.
In my spare time (mostly in the summer) I enjoy reading, home improvement projects, antiquing, and quilting. My family spent a week in the Wisconsin Dells area this summer and had a wonderful time.
